7 Best Great Dane Harness Options That Actually Work
Even though they are not the heaviest, Great Danes are the tallest dog breed on Earth (1). As you probably know if you have a Great Dane, these gentle giants usually have a pretty agreeable temper. However, they are still incredibly powerful, which makes being able to take control of your dog even more important than ever (2).
Luckily, a good harness will allow you to do just that (aside from proper training which is a must). In this guide, you’ll learn everything you need to know to find the perfect Great Dane harness.

How to Choose the Best Harness for Great Dane?
No matter what breed we are talking about, a good harness is one that makes both you and your pet feel comfortable in any situation. However, considering the sheer size of Great Danes, there are some species-specific issues that you need to keep in mind when choosing a style of harness for your pooch.
Great Dane Measurements - Finding the Right Size
Measuring a dog for a harness can be touch and when it comes to Great Danes, sometimes simply finding a harness that is big enough can be an issue. This is especially true for males who can be larger than females. Many models are not even made in their size (although all of the ones reviewed in our Top 7 list are). In order to ensure that the harness will fit, you’ll need to find out the exact measurements of your dog.
Dog harness sizes are typically based on a combination of measurements. The exact body measurement requirements vary by manufacturer but nearly always include your dog’s girth, or the circumference of the widest part of the ribcage. - Victoria Schade, PetMD
So, to measure your Great Danes chest girth, wrap a measuring tape around your pooch’s body a couple of inches behind their front legs, around the widest part of the chest.
Additionally, you’ll often also find “lower neck circumference” in harness sizing guidelines. To measure this one, just wrap the measuring tape around the lowest (and the widest) part of your pooch’s neck.
Finally, Great Dane measurements can vary widely between males and females and also between each dog individually, so do make sure to actually take your pup’s measurements before settling on a harness. If unsure, always go with the larger size because harnesses can usually be adjusted down to a slightly smaller size, but not up.
Front Clip Vs Back Clip
A harness can have a ring where you can attach the leash at the front, on the back, or in both places. Harnesses with the attachment at the front are usually called no-pull harnesses, although some no-pull harnesses feature a different design (check out the Sporn Non-Pull Mesh Dog Harness, for example). In any case, no-pull harnesses are not really necessary for adult Great Danes, but they can be good for puppies that need to be taught how to walk with a harness and a leash (4).
Thanks to their calm temper, adult Great Danes don’t really pull on the leash, so a back lead attachment works quite well. It’s also a more natural position for you to hold the leash.
Shape and Material
The shape of the harness and the material it is made of also play a big role in finding the right fit. For a Great Dane, it’s important to choose a strong harness with quality stitching that won’t rip easily. Additionally, it’s a good idea to find a harness that’s easy to put on and off, considering the size of a Great Dane.
Finally, some harnesses are simple and made for walks, while others are made for various outdoor activities. If you like adventures with your pooch and need some specialized equipment, you might want to check out our reviews of the best harnesses for hiking as well as the best GoPro dog harnesses.
The 7 Best Harnesses for Great Dane in 2020 Reviewed
#1: Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harness - Best Overall
Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harness is a strong, multifunctional harness that works especially well for big dogs such as the Great Danes. This harness was made with ripstop fabric which is almost impossible to rip apart (making it a great chew proof harness option too). Even though it’s very strong and durable, this fabric is also extremely lightweight to keep your pooch comfy at all times. You can even wash the harness in the washing machine on a gentle cycle and it will dry really quickly.
Kurgo combined this amazing fabric with nesting buckles made of steel instead of plastic, for extra strength. We all know how powerful a Great Dane can be, so this is definitely a plus.
The harness itself has a wider panel at the front which rests on your pup’s chest and collar bones. It’s not too wide, though, so it doesn’t get into the armpits of the dog which can cause chafing. There are 5 adjustment points, too, so you can rest assured that your pooch will get exactly the right fit. Lead attachment is available both on the front and the back of the harness which is perfect for training.
As a nice bonus, this harness includes a 10-inch seat belt loop for safer rides in the car. The seat belt loop also doubles as a short lead for keeping the dog close to you.
This is a great option for powerful medium to large breed of dogs in general. For more specific information check out our below guides:
#2: Sporn Non-Pull Mesh Dog Harness - Best Great Dane No-Pull Harness
This harness from Sporn has a unique design that is just perfect for Great Danes. When getting a harness for a large dog, you don’t really want one that covers large areas as it will just end up feeling like a sweater and hold in the heat thus making the dog uncomfortable. The Sporn Non-Pull Mesh Dog Harness is exactly the opposite of what we just described.
This is a lightweight harness that doesn’t cover too much of your pooch’s body, but at the same time it manages to be safe and even prevent pulling. How is all of this possible? Well, the front panel of the harness is made of elastic mesh that gently transfers the weight of your pooch back towards you when they pull. Two adjustable straps go around the neck of the dog. The two bottom straps go through a metal loop on the back, enabling the unique no-pull & ant-jump mechanism to work. These straps also come with padded sleeves to ensure there is no chafing or discomfort.
Even though it’s lightweight and breathable, this harness was made of high-quality nylon, so there is no need to worry about it ripping apart. In short, it’s the perfect harness for Great Dane leash training.

#3: Planet Dog Cozy Hemp Adjustable Dog Harness - The Eco-Friendly Choice
We know how hard it can be for the eco-conscious pet parents to find all the necessary gear and avoid plastic at the same time. This is why we were happy to find the Planet Dog Cozy Hemp Adjustable Dog Harness. Namely, this harness is different from most other harnesses because of one thing - it’s made of hemp instead of nylon.
As many of you probably know, hemp fabric is not only very strong and durable, but it’s also one of the most sustainable alternatives to synthetic materials (5). In the case of this harness from Planet Dog, at least, it seems to work really well. This harness is just as strong as any other, and probably just as durable. In addition to the hemp, it features a fleece lining to keep it comfortable for your dog. The buckles are made of plastic (so yes, there is some plastic), but it is reinforced with nylon and very durable. Other hardware parts are made of metal.
Now, this is definitely not a training harness, but it tends to work really well for walking a Great Dane if your dog is already trained and well-behaved.
#4: Onetigris Tactical Service Dog Vest - Best Great Dane Service Dog Vest
The OneTigris Tactical Service Dog Vest is perfect for, but not limited to, service dogs. This harness features a heavy-duty nylon shell combined with a soft interior padding. The result of this combination is a comfortable, water-resistant harness that is lightweight and durable at the same time. Thanks to this, it’s perfect for any dog that spends a lot of active time outside - it doesn’t matter if it’s a service dog or you just love having lots of adventures with your pooch.
Both the chest straps and the back straps on this harness from OneTigris are also made from high-quality nylon. Each strap can be adjusted so the harness fits really snuggly, which is especially important if you want to attach MOLLE pouches or some gear to the harness. The reason why we mention this, is of course, because it is doable - this harness comes with webbing on both sides to which anything can be attached. Finally, there is also a handle at the back for easy control
#5: Chai’s Choice 3m Reflective Dog Harness - Most Colorful Great Dane Harness
The Chai’s Choice 3M Reflective Dog Harness comes in 9 different colors. There is girly pink, bright blue, cheerful yellow, and of course, normal black, among others. Obviously this is not the most important feature to consider when choosing a Great Dane walking harness, but it’s a nice bonus to be able to choose the color that matches your pooch’s personality perfectly. What is important, though, is that this harness form Chai’s Choice features reflective piping stitched across the shell. In combination with a bright color, this makes it perfect for night walks.
Similar to most harnesses on our list, the outer shell of the Chai’s Choice harness was made of high-quality nylon. It does have soft padding on the inside, though, which is a must if you want to keep your dog comfortable during long walks.
Another great thing about the Chai’s Choice 3M Reflective Dog Harness is the fact that it allows for attaching the lead either at the front or at the back. The back attachment is great for those leisurely walks, and the front one can help remind your dog not to pull. It will also help distribute the weight properly so your pooch doesn’t hurt himself while pulling. There is also a handle on the back for extra security which doubles as a seat belt attachment point - just pull the seat belt through it and you can enjoy a safe car ride with your pooch!
#6: Petsafe Easy Walk Dog Harness - Best Value For Money
The PetSafe Easy Walk Dog Harness is made to help you teach your dog not to pull in a firm bud safe way. The simple design immediately stands out - it’s basically just three adjustable nylon straps connected with metal attachments. Unlike most other harnesses, this one does not have a soft padding. This was done on purpose, since it allows the harness to cause a little discomfort to your pooch if they start pulling without hurting them.
One thing we loved about this harness is the fact that it’s super easy to put on and take off. Thanks to the two quick-release buckles, it only takes a couple of seconds, which is perfect for quick training sessions. With that being said, it’s probably not the best choice for Great Danes once they have finished training and know not to pull as it might be a little uncomfortable.
#7: Ezydog Quick Fit Dog Harness - Easiest To Set Up
As the name suggests, the EzyDog Quick Fit harness was made to be fitted quickly. In fact, there is only one buckle that needs to be snapped into place and you’re ready to go! The harness goes over your dog’s head, which is great for Great Danes, since step in harnesses can be super complicated to put on with such large dogs.
Even though there is only one buckle on this harness, it is still completely adjustable. The best thing is that you need to adjust it only once and it stays in place. The belly strap needs to be adjusted first in a normal way. The chest strap is adjusted in a way that is quite different than most other harnesses. There is a soft neoprene sleeve that you need to move to the side, and then you can adjust the strap underneath it. Put the neoprene cover back in place, and you’re all set. We really loved the neoprene cover because it’s really soft and comfortable for the dog. It also works great in rainy weather or for pooches that love to swim, since it dries really quickly and doesn’t cause any discomfort even when wet.
The lead attachment is on the back. It’s an O-ring made of stainless steel which is great since it won’t rust or get damaged in contact with water either.
Choosing A Harness for Great Dane: The Final Verdict
Great Danes tend to be quite peaceful walkers, and usually there is no need to constantly pull their harness. This is why you’ll want to find something comfortable for them. However, you still want a harness that’s strong enough to withstand the weight of this giant breed. The Kurgo Tru-Fit Smart Harness fits the description perfectly. However, if you need a training harness for a Great Dane pup, we recommend trying out the Sporn Non-Pull Mesh Dog Harness.
