Best Washable Dog Bed | Wash & Zip Odor Free

If you look over in the corner of your living room, do you see a big pile of fur barely concealing a worn-out dog bed? It is probably time for a new place for your pup to snooze!

This time, consider a washable bed so that you can save money on replacements while keeping the fur and dog smell under control in your home.

Want to know the best part?

This review includes the best dog beds with zipper covers as well as one pick that you can toss right in the washer as is. Whether you are looking for the best bargain or the best washable orthopedic dog bed, you will find it here.

After the reviews of the top washable beds, be sure to read on for handy training tips that will help make sure your new purchase is a big hit!

Qualities to Consider Before you Buy

Size

Although many dogs like to tuck into a small ball when sleeping, in most cases you want to be sure your dog bed is long enough to accommodate your pal while lying flat on his side. (The exception is for toy breeds that need a cuddle style bed to maintain body heat at night.)

We wanted to make sure you have the information you need to make your decision so we included the dimensions of every product in this review of top rated washable beds.

To make sure your purchase will be a good fit, measure your dog from the tip of the nose back to the back of the hindquarters (don’t include the length of the tail). Make sure the length dimensions will accommodate your canine before you buy.

If you have a giant breed, this can be a particularly difficult task. Be sure to check out our best washable bed for giant breeds.

Support

One of the most important qualities to think about before spending money on a dog bed is the amount of support that your pet needs.

Generally speaking, those beds with more support tend to cost a bit more, but the difference is important for those dogs that need the additional padding. Such dogs include large and giant breeds, senior canines, and those dogs recovering from surgeries. The most supportive beds are usually labeled as orthopedic.

Fabrics

When it comes to selecting a dog bed, don’t overlook the importance of quality fabrics. All of the beds in this review have durable exterior fabrics. Although you can find cheaper alternatives, often the fabrics are thin, leading to a bed that needs to be replaced much sooner.

In addition, if you have a dog that has some issues with incontinence, be sure to check out our best waterproof dog bed selection. This will allow you to protect the foam even if your pup has an accident, while tossing the cover in the wash to be cleaned.

Style

One final choice to make that you will notice when you look at washable beds is that you can choose between flat, side rails or cuddle style beds. Here are some tips to know which style is best for you:

Flat: The main advantages of a flat bed are that they are easiest to pack for travel and they are usually simpler to get the cover on and off.

Side rails: Providing extra support and usually more comfortable for many dogs because they can lay their head on the elevated sides, these are a good choice for those dogs that like to turn in circles and “nest” before they pick the perfect spot for a nap.

Cuddle: High sides and a small, deep center is typical of dog beds made for toy breeds. This helps them keep warm when sleeping alone. The washable cuddle dog beds can be thrown right in the washing machine.

A great balance of excellent design, features and price.

This machine washable canine bed is our top all-around pick because it is both feature rich and reasonably priced. Unless you need a specialty bed for toy or giant breeds, or need orthopedic grade support for your dog, this would be a good choice.

Each section of this dog bed is made with carefully selected fabrics to make sure form meets function. The sleeping surface is a very thick soft plush which is both warm and inviting. A shorter pile plush lines the rails making it easier for a quick wipe down for a spot cleaning. The base has a water-resistant dense fabric constructed with durability in mind.

There are two sections to this bed which you can uncover using the durable zippers. Once you remove the cover, it can be tossed in the machine for a complete wash followed by drying on the gentle cycle which will remove any remaining fur.

While many dog beds have soft bolster sides, they are often so loosely stuffed that they collapse easily. In this case, the sides are generously stuffed with a poly cotton fill mix that holds its shape over time.

PROS
  • Reasonable price on all sizes
  • Sizes available for dogs up to 100 pounds
  • High quality materials
  • Memory foam base and sturdy rails for strong support
  • Antibacterial treatment on foam and fabrics
  • Waterproof and non-slip rubber bottom
CONS
  • Not enough padding for orthopedic support
  • Does not come large enough for giant dog breeds

A great choice for outdoor adventurers.

If you are the type that enjoys camping, swimming and other outdoor adventure with your canine companion, this may be the right choice for you. Several standout features give this waterproof dog bed advantages when it comes to travel and durability.

The streamlined design takes up less space without sacrificing support over the bumper style dog beds in its class, making it ideal for packing for vacation. A full 6” of premium foam (including 2” of high density orthopedic memory foam) means this bed is ready for dogs that need the extra support after a long day on the trail.

A single zipper goes around this bed which makes it much easier to take apart for washing than bumper designs. In addition, it features a waterproof lining which keeps the dense foam pads protected from moisture. This is a great feature for dogs that love to swim, as well as senior dogs that have incontinence issues.

Finally, the fabric on this bed is easy to wipe clean with a dense Oxford fabric exterior. In addition, the company makes it easy to purchase additional covers in a variety of colors if you want to have a clean back up ready for when you are traveling.

PROS
  • Extremely durable washable fabric exterior
  • Waterproof liner
  • 6” of dense foam support, perfect for dogs that need orthopedic support
  • Travel ready - easy to pack because of the streamlined design
  • 8 flashy colors to choose from
  • Simple zipper design for fast removing or replacing the cover
  • Huge size selection covering toy to giant breeds
CONS
  • On the pricey side, but justified given the high quality
  • Does not have bumpers, which some dogs like for comfort

Superior selection for senior dogs that need extra support.

Older dogs tend to experience achy joints, either from arthritis or just from plain old wear and tear. Many dog beds have plenty of style but check the specifications on the amount and quality of foam before you buy – most don’t have the orthopedic support many veterinarians recommend for seniors.

This orthopedic dog bed has 4” of grooved orthopedic foam which provides excellent support for dogs up to about 80 pounds. (If your dog is larger, we would recommend the previous pick for additional support with a full 6” of foam at the base). In addition, this bed has padded rims that give your pooch the ability to nestle up against the rim for additional neck support.

This dog bed features zipper covers that open in two sections so that you can pull the padding from the base and bumpers to toss the cover right in the washing machine. It is a little tricky to get the ample padding stuffed back in, however, the fabrics are designed to be easy to wipe or vacuum so you won’t have to wash it often.

PROS
  • 4” of solid and grooved memory foam in the base for orthopedic support
  • Thick padded rims to give your dog cozy support on the sides
  • Nonslip rubber backing to prevent the bed from sliding on slick floors
  • Plush interior fabric for the ultimate in soft comfort
  • Easy to wipe/vacuum fabrics to keep fur to a minimum between washings
  • Excellent price point for a machine washable orthopedic dog bed
CONS
  • Size range limited to medium and large sized breeds
  • Takes a bit of time to get the stuffing back in right after you wash the cover

The go-to for a toasty tiny tike.

The ideal bed for larger dogs is usually one with strong, dense foam support. However, with small and toy breeds, the primary concern is that they can maintain their body heat during a nap.

In fact, if you want your tiny tot to sleep somewhere other than tucked right up next to you in bed, a specialty dog bed for toy breeds is almost a must. This bed features thick plush interiors and very tall sides that wrap around your pup giving her the comfort of a hug without disturbing your sleep.

This “cuddler” comes in two sizes. The standard is ideal for toy breeds such as Chihuahuas, Papillons, Yorkshire Terriers, Pugs and Pomeranians. If you have a small dog that is over 25 pounds, go for the jumbo size, perfect for Corgis, Cavaliers, Italian Greyhounds, and Beagles.

When you are ready to wash it, you don’t even have to take it apart. It is designed to throw right in the washing machine for fast and convenient cleaning. It comes in 14 colors so it is a great choice for multiple dog households since every pup will need their own bed.

Beware: This bed is so comfortable that you lap might face stiff competition for your pocket pooch’s favorite spot!

PROS
  • High sides are both supportive and trap body heat for warmth
  • Super plush fabric for a very soft and inviting feel
  • 14 colors available to match any décor
  • High quality fabrics and pet-safe stuffing
  • No disassembly required – toss the whole thing right in the wash
  • Waterproof bottom to protect floors in cases of incontinence
  • Very reasonable price tag, particularly given the quality

A giant washable dog bed fit for a canine king (or queen)!

Let’s face it, giant breeds such as Great Danes, Newfoundlands, Giant Schnauzers, Mastiffs and St. Bernards have special needs when it comes to orthopedic support. In addition, these big bruisers tend to experience sore joints and problems such as hip dysplasia as they age.

Just finding a bed that is wide and long enough to accommodate them is not enough. This washable canine bed includes 3 stages of American made dense foam for extreme support for dogs weighing up to 300 pounds. It has a full 7” of foam, one of the thickest on the market.

The cover is a durable microfiber that not only wipes clean in a snap, it also easily unzips for a machine washable bed that is easy to take apart and put back together. The low-profile fabric won’t trap fur so you can easily vacuum this bed in between washes.

A full 60” of length on the largest size is plenty of room for your big guy or gal to stretch out a bit for a restful nap. Looking for a solution to get Fido off the couch? This may be your ticket.

Do right by your furry friend without breaking the bank.

If you are looking for an inexpensive machine washable dog bed for a small to medium sized dog, this is our recommended choice. This sofa style doggy bed includes creature comforts and structural support, but it comes in a price that anyone can afford.

The base of this bed is made with egg-crate foam. While we would not recommend it for dogs that need orthopedic support, it is plenty for most canines and much more supportive than beds stuffed with fluffy stuffing.

In addition, this bed has a three-sided rim that allows your dog to nest in for a very comfortable nap. Some dogs like to prop their head up when they sleep, and the bumpers on the side also allow for that.   The top of the bed is a soft plush, with the sides made from a matching microfiber that wipes clean with ease.

When you are ready to wash it, just unzip the cover and throw it in the machine then dry on the gentle cycle. It is available in 4 neutral colors that will fit in with any home décor.

PROS
  • Fantastic price without sacrificing on quality
  • 4 great colors to choose from
  • Soft, plush sleeping surface
  • Deep egg crate foam for good support
  • Unzip the cover for machine washing
  • Sturdy cushioned rails for added neck and back support
CONS
  • Does not come in sizes for extra-large or giant breeds (over 100 pounds)
  • Fabric is not quite as durable as top-end models

Training Tips: Teach your dog to use a dog bed

Whether you want to teach your dog to use their bed rather than the people furniture, or you want to be able to send her to her bed for a quiet time out on command, here are some training tips to make sure you are doing your best to make your new bed a place your pup enjoys.

1. Associate the bed with reward and praise.

The minute you take the bed out of the packaging, be sure that you are encouraging and positive as your dog investigates. Avoid making any corrections or using harsh tones around it. Toss a few treats in the bed and praise your dog when she goes in to get them.

2. Redirect to the bed when your dog tries to get on furniture.

Make sure you give your dog a chance to learn that the bed is a better choice than the couch by gently redirecting her to her new comfy spot when she tries to get on the furniture. Again, no need for a harsh tone here. Reward her with some praise or a treat when she chooses her nap spot, whether she does so under direction or of her own choice.

3. Start to give “Time-Outs” when your dog gets on furniture.

One of the most effective ways to curb behavior without using harsh physical punishment or angry tones (which can lead to a fearful and potentially dangerous dog) is the effective use of short “Time-Outs”.

It is important to FIRST make sure your pup has a history of being rewarded for choosing his bed over furniture. Once that is established, start placing him in his crate, or in an empty room away from people, for 3-5 minutes when he chooses to get on the banned furniture. Continue to reward and praise when he chooses his bed.

4. Put “Go to Bed” on command.

When your dog will go to her bed, lay down, and stay on command, you have a very useful tool that can come in handy for any number of behavior controls down the road. After you have done the training to make sure the bed is a comfortable and happy place for your dog, try putting this easy behavior on command.

  • Start by standing close to the bed and luring your dog on it with a treat. When she gets on the bed, mark the behavior with a “Yes!” or use your clicker. Then, follow the marking sound with a small food reward. Repeat 5 times.
  • Now do the same movement with your hand, this time with no treat in it. Again, mark and reward. Repeat 5 times.
  • Next, step a few feet away from the bed, and repeat. Over the course of the next few rounds, increase your distance from the bed slowly. In addition, start adding a slight pause after your dog gets on the mat before you mark and reward. Add time gradually until you are waiting up to 15 seconds before mark/rewarding.
  • Once your dog “gets it” and is doing this trick on the hand signal alone, start adding the vocal command “Go to bed!” (Keep the tone light, no one likes to have commands yelled at them.) Keep practicing this until you have nearly 100% success rate from the other side of the room.
  • Practice this trick often, adding distance and duration over time. You can even practice this trick from another room.

Once you have this behavior exactly where you want it, it is time to start fading the food rewards. To do this, start using praise when you practice, decreasing the rate of reward you use. In addition, sometimes surprise your dog with a huge reward, such as a chew bone, when they choose their bed on their own.
